the sarau

Art Curation & Collective

The Sarau is inspired by sarau, a cultural event of Portuguese and Brazilian origin, originating from the latin word for “evening gathering”. It is a social and cultural event where people come together to express themselves through various art forms. The word derives from the latin seranus. In Brazil, they were associated with the romanticism movement, becoming hubs for the exchange of new ideas.

The Sarau as a collective and curatorial platform has the mission to bring forth a movement of artistic communion, offering through its inclusive curatorship both artists and audiences the chance to expand their artistic experiences in a space of connection and exchange. In our curatorial practice, we work closely with emerging and early-career artists, with the aim of fostering possibilities and creating bridges across diverse artistic languages. By integrating artists from different backgrounds and disciplines, we encourage a rich exchange of experiences that broadens the horizons of everyone involved.

Let's create something that involves experiences in Japan.

Behind The Sarau

Fernando Kague

Fernando Kague is a Brazilian, Japanese descent artist, performer, and curator based in Tokyo. His practice explores the intersections of family memory, nature/spirituality, and topics related to the Nikkei diaspora, often merging performance, installation, and collaborative storytelling. As the founder of Sarau, a collective and curatorial platform, he creates spaces of communion where emerging voices and diverse artistic languages can meet, exchange, and expand. Through both his personal work and Sarau’s initiatives, Fernando cultivates environments of connection, experimentation, and shared transformation.

With a background in film, theater, and cultural production, Fernando brings to Sarau the belief that art is a living organism—one that exists through the collaboration of individuals who keep the exercise of creativity alive.
